International Experience
Fractal is a boutique architecture studio. The practice was formed in 2017 by James Atkinson (ARB) on the tropical island of Koh Samui, Thailand, providing architectural and design services both locally and internationally.
Subsequently an additional team was established in the coastal city of Da Nang, Vietnam, with Sang Ho joining to help lead the studio there.
Fractal’s portfolio encompasses a broad range of project typologies and scales covering all major sectors including residential, commercial, cultural, education, master planning, high-rise and hospitality.
James’s experience has been truly international with over 24 years of designing award-winning projects across Asia, Africa and Europe. With projects in China, England, Ghana, Hong Kong, India, Latvia, Saudi Arabia, Scotland, Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan, Tanzania, Thailand and Vietnam.
Background
Following his graduation from the Mackintosh School of Architecture in Glasgow, Scotland, James worked with Foster & Partners, RMJM and was more recently a Director at M System Architecture helping to lead both their Vietnam and Thailand offices.
Over the years James’s key design involvement has included projects that have won the VMARK Vietnam Design Award, Thai Property Awards, Vietnamese National Architecture Award, South African Regional Institute Architecture Award and in addition has helped design numerous competition winners across China and Scotland.
He was a recent speaker at the GBB 13th real estate development summit (Saudi Arabia Edition) in Milan and also at the VMARK Design Voices “Art of Sensory Design” in Ho Chi Minh City. James was invited to take part in a documentary about Saudi Arabian cities and architecture, where he was interviewed and filmed on location in the Eastern Province, KSA.
Process
We encourage a collaborative and creative approach with both clients and consultants. With no set stylistic approach our projects commence with each unique location and client brief.
Here at Fractal we always strive to improve our designs and seek better solutions throughout all stages of a project. Our motivation is to create beautiful, practical and enjoyable spaces to live, work and play.
Inspiration
Having called 5 countries home and visited over 50, world travel has always been both a passion and constant source of inspiration for James, in particular remote locations that involve wildlife and the underwater world.
Context, nature and local traditions often inspire our designs forming concepts which are executed in a contemporary manner.
Sustainability and green design principles are viewed as an integral part of the design process rather than an add on.
We are presently working on the designs of hotels, beach resorts, high-end residential villa projects (developments and bespoke residences) and leisure projects for both individual land owners and developers, internationally.
